FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When is WYD 2011?
WYD will be from approximately August 9-23, 2011. On approximately August 9, 2011 we will depart San Antonio by bus to Houston. We will fly out of Houston. We will then participate in Days in the Diocese. On approximately August 15th we will arrive in Madrid for WYD Proper. Closing mass will be on Sunday August 21st. We hope to arrive back in San Antonio around the 23rd.

What is Days in the Diocese?
Days in the Diocese is a time when pilgrims have the opportunity to learn more about the people and culture of Spain. During this time, pilgrims might have the opportunity to stay with host families. The events for the week are prepared by the Parish/Diocese in which we are placed. All meals are provided during this time.

How much will WYD 2011 cost?
The estimated cost for WYD 2011 is $2,500 for Simple Accommodations and $3,500 for Hotel Lodging. Simple Accommodations and Hotel lodging apply to the week we are in Madrid.

What expenses are not covered in the price?
Pilgrims should plan to pay for approximately 3 days of meals. In addition, all sightseeing (if time permits) and souvenirs are not covered. Pilgrims will also have the opportunity to purchase travelers insurance.

What are Simple Accommodations?
Simple Accommodations can be interpreted as “living simply.” Normally pilgrims choosing Simple Accommodations sleep on the floor of a school or gymnasium. Showers and restrooms are on site, however they are normally limited in size and shared by large groups. The site may be shared by other English speaking pilgrims. The sites are locked during the day and staff is on site the entire time pilgrims are there. This provides a great time for bonding as a group and truly experiencing the pilgrimage.

What should I pack?
A packing list is linked in the “Resources” section of our website. In addition, a packing demonstration will be performed at one of our Pilgrims Gatherings.

I really want to go, but do not think I can afford it. What do I do?
If you have a desire to attend WYD and are dedicated to make it happen, we will work with you. Fundraising Ideas can be found in the “Resources” section of our website. The Archdiocese will also host fundraisers. Scholarships are available.

How much extra money should I take?
Each pilgrim should plan to take approximately $50 -$100 with them. US dollars can be converted to Euros at the Frost Bank downtown. Using a credit card while at WYD will result in the best exchange rates, although some cash is helpful.

What is the age limits for WYD?
WYD is geared toward those ages 18-35 however there is no upper age limit.

Do I need to be physically fit to participate in WYD?
All pilgrims will need to be able to carry all of their luggage. In addition, pilgrims are often required to walk to many events and transportation pickup sites. On the last Saturday, all participants will go on pilgrimage to the site of the Vigil. We will then sleep under the starts. In the morning we will have the closing Mass with the Holy Father. The exact walking distances will not be known until we arrive.

What should I expect as a WYD pilgrim?
As a pilgrim traveling with the Archdiocese of San Antonio, you are expected to attend Pilgrims Gatherings. The gatherings will be held at various parishes throughout the San Antonio area. We will also have a Day of Service, Day of Reflection and Despedida Mass. The locations, dates, and times of all meetings will be posted on the Events Calendar on this website and on our Facebook page (San Antonio World Youth Day Pilgrims).

I do not speak Spanish. Is that going to be a problem?
Our experience has shown that many people throughout the world speak English. We have found that we are always able to communicate even if we speak different languages. It would also be a good idea to have a Spanish/English dictionary just in case.

What language will be used during the Papal Mass and other WYD events?
Daily catecheses will be done in English while all other WYD events will be done in multiple languages. An English translation will be broadcast and we encourage pilgrims to bring a personal AM/FM radio.

Will we be able to communicate with our family and friends at home?
In some cases, pilgrims will have access to the internet and be able to send emails home. Due to the time difference and busy schedules, phone calls are not always practical or possible. Although international cell phone plans are available, we ask that pilgrims think twice before brining phones or other expensive electronics to WYD as they can detract from the experience of the pilgrimage.
